New Year, New Adventures

January has flown by! I can't believe that we are almost 1/12th of the way through 2010 (can you tell I have been teaching fractions to my 5th graders?). We have been having a great start to 2010. Busy as always, but having a blast! I started my half marathon training program at the beginning of the month and I am really enjoying it! It has definitely taken my running up to a higher level! Before I was running about 15 miles a week and now I am up to about 25-30! My farthest run prior to this program was a 10K (6.2 miles) and now we are up to 9 miles on our Saturday morning group runs. It was my New Year's Resolution this year to run a half marathon and I am so glad that I am! I love the group that I am running with and the coaches are great. I have already learned so much about running and pushed myself in ways that I couldn't have imagined a year ago!

Lucca loves kindergarten and is at the top of her class academically. She is performing above a first grade level! She has many friends and loves Kevin, her teacher. They got to go to Chico State last week to see the Peking Acrobats. I love that she is at a school where Field Trips are not only allowed, but viewed as a fundamental piece of the curriculum. We are a little worried about the future of her school since it is an Alternative Program in the district and the district is facing state receivership next year, but we are remaining optimistic and hopeful that it will remain intact. Lucca is doing jazz/tap this spring and is getting ready for spring soccer to start. She still spends the majority of her time at her art table creating things that blow us away! She is so creative! Definitely didn't come from me! Here she is decorating the cardboard house that Santa brought her.Siena is now 10 months old! So hard to believe that my baby is almost 1! She started getting around pretty good right after Thanksgiving. She started out by rolling, then army crawling, now she is finally crawling on all fours and she can get across a room faster than ever! We really have to keep an eye on her now because she is a magnet to anything small and potentially dangerous. She puts everything in her mouth! Last week we caught her with a Wallflower (the fragrance plug-ins from Bath and Body Works). She had crawled up to it, removed it from the outlet, unscrewed it, and had the fragrance wick in her mouth! We were worried for a few hours that we were going to have to call the Poison Control center, but apparently we got to her before she ingested any of the fragrance. Needless to say, all remaining Wallflowers were promptly removed from the outlets! Siena loves to feed herself now, and her favorite foods are black beans and cheese. Unfortunately, these are also two of the messiest foods imaginable so we have to clean up her highchair and the floor around it after almost every feeding. She is learning how to drink out of a sippy cup but hasn't quite mastered it yet. She is quite the little squirmer now while being changed, so that is becoming more and more of a challenge. Her other big milestone this month is that she has learned to pull herself up to a standing position on the couch. I am sure she will be walking before we know it! She loves to babble and do whatever Lucca is doing. Lucca still adores her and they are really good playmates. They love to get in Siena's crib together and play!
This last week we were hit with a crazy storm! It has been raining nonstop for almost a week! 11 power poles were knocked down by the wind right by our house on Wednesday and we were subsequently without power for 2 days. Luckily, we were able to spend our evenings staying warm and being fed at Lito and Lita's house! They took very good care of us during our crisis!
Here are a few pictures from the month of January...

Poppy came to visit us and took us out to dinner at Basque Norte! It was so good to see him after almost 9 years!Siena loved the beans, of course, and the spaghettini at Basque!

Our friends Laura, John, and Helena came to visit and had a birthday party for Helena at Athletic Horizons. They moved to Nevada City in the fall. It was so good to see them again!

Cousin fun! Luciana came over to play for Grammie's birthday dinner!

Emily, I am so proud of you on your inspiration with the marathon training. I did it, but didn't train and I couldn't imagine running that far or even half that far more than just that once!
Lucca is adorable like always and Siena is getting so big. She is such a cutie. I am dying to see you and get the girls together, it was so unfortunate that we completely missed eachother over the holiday!
